In martial arts and combat sports, striking refers to hand-to-hand combat between opponents, generally in a standing position.
Strikes can come from fists, knees, elbows, and kicks in order to hurt your opponent or set up the opportunity to enter into grappling. Different striking arts utilize these weapons in different ways.
A large part of grappling is positioning and obtaining a dominant position. A dominant position (usually on top) allows the dominant grappler a variety of options, including: attempting to escape by standing up, obtaining a pin to control and exhaust the opponent, executing a submission hold, or striking the opponent.
Self-defence encompasses a wide range of skills to help kids deal with and avoid bullying, but ‘hitting back’ is quite low down the list. Most tactics kids can use as self-defence involve developing confidence and learning to listen to their instincts.
